Naples boasts one of the most beautiful and artistic metro systems in the world, known as “Stazioni dell’Arte” (Art Stations). As part of this unique project, over 100 artists and architects transformed selected stations into underground modern art galleries.

The most remarkable stations include:

  • Toledo – A surreal “underwater” metro experience.
  • Università – A futuristic world of colors and abstract shapes.
  • Garibaldi – A striking interplay of light and movement.

Naples also has one of Italy’s deepest metro systems, with tunnels carved through layers of tuff and volcanic rock, making construction exceptionally complex. Toledo station is the deepest, reaching 164 feet underground.

  • Montesanto: 6:30 AM – 10:30 PM.

Urban Elevators 🏙️

Naples offers free public elevators to facilitate movement around the city:

  • Chiaia – Connects Via Chiaia with Piazza S. Maria degli Angeli.
  • Acton – Connects Via Acton with Piazza Plebiscito.
  • Sanità – Connects Sanità Bridge to Sanità district.
  • Ventaglieri – Connects Montesanto with Via Avellino in Tarsia.
 Public Transport Tickets

There are two types of city tickets in Naples, differing slightly in price and coverage. These are:

  • ANM (Azienda Napoletana Mobilità) – Sufficient for getting around the city, covering buses, trams, funiculars, and metro (Line 1 and Line 6).
  • TIC (Ticket Integrato Campania) – For traveling further. It includes ANM services plus Metro Line 2 and suburban trains (Circumvesuviana, Cumana, Trenitalia).

Tickets can be purchased from vending machines at metro and funicular stations, at newsstands, via the UnicoCampania app, or through the Tap&Go system.

Tap&Go works by tapping a bank card or an NFC-enabled device (e.g., smartwatch, phone) on the validator when entering and exiting the vehicle, and the system automatically calculates the fare.

Moreover, at the end of the day, the system applies the most cost-effective fare (e.g., if you take more than three trips, it will count as a day ticket. This also applies if you forget to tap out).
