“Castles, Squares, and Palaces” is our second walking tour proposal in Naples. We start at Piazza Municipio, easily accessible by metro. Here, we will explore the history of this square and take a look at Sant’Elmo Castle, which towers over the city from the Vomero hill. From the square, we will head to Castel Nuovo, famous for its picturesque triumphal arch – one of the most iconic landmarks of Naples. Next, we will visit the impressive Galleria Umberto I, a monumental late 19th-century arcade with a stunning iron-and-glass roof.
Our journey continues to Piazza Trieste e Trento, where we will admire the unique Artichoke Fountain and visit one of Italy’s most renowned cafés – Gambrinus. From there, we proceed to the city’s largest square, the famous Piazza del Plebiscito, where an intriguing challenge for visitors awaits. Will we be able to overcome it? Regardless of the outcome, we will move on to explore the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, inspired by the Roman Pantheon. The last stop in this section will be the magnificent royal residence – Palazzo Reale.
Following the waterfront, we will reach Naples’ oldest castle – Castel dell’Ovo, shrouded in the legend of Virgil’s mystical egg.
The route is easy and not too long, but keep in mind that some attractions along the way require ticket purchases.
