“See Naples…” is the ideal first walk to begin exploring the magnificent historic center of the city.
Our journey starts at the grand entrance to Naples, following the Royal Road from Apulia. We step into the city as important guests once did—through the Porta Capuana gate. Just beyond it stands the Church of Saint Catherine, adorned with one of Naples’ first Renaissance domes.
As we take our first steps into the historic center, we pass by Castel Capuano, once a royal residence, later serving as a courthouse and prison. The street we continue on—Via dei Tribunali—owes its name to these institutions. In the ancient urban grid of Naples, this was once known as Decumanus.
This street leads us to the city’s most important cathedral, Duomo di Napoli, home to the Archbishop of Naples. Here, three times a year, the city witnesses the legendary miracle of Saint Januarius’ blood, the patron saint of Naples.
We continue through the narrow alleys of the historic center, arriving at Piazza San Gaetano, the starting point of Via San Gregorio Armeno, the world-famous street of Neapolitan nativity scene artisans.
After exploring the square and its stunning basilicas, we descend into Underground Naples. Navigating through its narrow, dimly lit tunnels, we discover the volcanic rock phenomenon that made the city’s underground expansion possible. Back at street level, Via dei Tribunali leads us to Piazzetta Pietrasanta, once haunted by the legend of a devil disguised as a pig—until the construction of an early Christian basilica drove it away.
Passing by one of Italy’s oldest music conservatories, we reach Piazza Bellini, where ancient Greek walls are revealed amid elegant palaces and lively cafés.
From here, we follow the Street of Music to Port’Alba, a historic gateway opened by Viceroy Toledo, leading us to Piazza Dante. As we admire the former Foro Carolino, a tribute to King Charles III of Bourbon, we search for the authentic time equation system that once helped synchronize time in the city.
Our walk ends at Dante Metro Station, which doubles as an exhibition space for contemporary art.
This route is easy, engaging, and filled with the vibrant sights, sounds, and scents of Naples. Designed to take half a day, it can be extended or combined with another itinerary at your own pace.
