We begin our walk where we finished our first one – at the Square of Miracles. This time, however, we continue beyond the square, following Pisa’s medieval city walls. Passing the Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, we reach Piazza dei Cavalieri, once the political heart of the Republic of Pisa and later transformed by Giorgio Vasari into the impressive center of the Order of Saint Stephen. Here we’ll see Palazzo della Carovana, the Clock Palace with the dark story of Count Ugolino, and the monument to Cosimo I de’ Medici.
After history and politics, it’s time for a little greenery. We visit the Orto Botanico, one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe, and then stop at San Nicola, where another surprise awaits us… Pisa has more than one leaning tower!
From here, our route takes us toward the Arno River. We pass Palazzo delle Vedove and visit the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Reale, once a Medici residence. Along the river, we return to the days of Pisa’s maritime power at the Arsenali della Repubblica di Pisa, before continuing to San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno.
The final part of our walk follows the Arno to the small but remarkable Santa Maria della Spina, and then to Palazzo Blu. This is where we end our second route through Pisa – a walk filled with medieval history, the Medici, art, and traces of the city’s powerful maritime republic.
