Intro

Rome: Tracing the Republic and Empire is a walking tour 🚶‍♂️ through the most iconic and atmospheric sites of ancient Rome. The route is easy but requires significant walking, taking a full day or more at a relaxed pace. Some attractions require paid and timed entry. You can also follow the route on our YouTube channel 🎬.

We start near the Flavian Amphitheater, famously known as the Colosseum. The first stop is Domus Aurea, Nero’s Golden House, located in a nearby park, which also features remnants of structures that supported the amphitheater’s operations. Next, we explore the Colosseum, ideally including the hypogeum (underground passages), arena, and attic.

The walk continues through the imperial forums, from the Roman Forum to Trajan’s Forum.

From the forums, we head to Capitoline Hill, featuring the iconic steps and square designed by Michelangelo. Be sure to visit the Capitoline Museums and find the Capitoline Wolf statue behind the Senatorial Palace.

The next stop is the Theater of Marcellus, where nearby you can admire fragments of ancient temples. The walk concludes at the Portico of Octavia, a perfect end to this historical journey.

🦉👉 Before You Go

  • Buy your Colosseum tickets online and arrive at least 30 minutes early, as multiple entry checks are conducted.
  • Colosseum tickets can be purchased as a combined option with the Roman Forum.
  • Note that the second section of the Roman Forum is across the street, and entry must be used on the same day.
