Mdina and Rabat are among the places that reveal Malta’s many historical layers most clearly. This route leads through Mdina — the island’s former capital, known as the Silent City — and then descends into Rabat, where history becomes even more vivid among grottoes, catacombs and places of worship.
We begin the walk at the City Gate. Along the way, we pass the Museum of Natural History and the seat of the Mdina Local Council, before reaching St Paul’s Cathedral and Palazzo Falson — two important landmarks in the city’s heritage. The route then continues to Bastion Square, with its wide views over the surrounding landscape. From there, we head down to Rabat, where we visit St Paul’s Church, St Paul’s Grotto and the catacombs. It is a walk that combines Mdina’s monumental architecture with the underground and early Christian heritage of Rabat.
