Welcome back to Valletta! 👋
This is already our second walk through this fortress city — and this time we follow the traces of war, knights, faith, and underground history, where Malta’s story becomes truly loud, dramatic, and extraordinary.
We begin once again near the entrance to the city, around City Gate, and then continue through places that best show why Valletta is not just a beautiful capital, but above all a city born out of defense. Along the way, you will see Jean de Valette Square, the Church of Our Lady of Victories, St Catherine of Italy Church, St James’ Cavalier, Auberge de Castille, Upper Barrakka Gardens, the Saluting Battery, Valletta’s wartime underground, the Lascaris War Rooms, Victoria Gate, MUŻA, St Paul’s Shipwreck Church, Lower Barrakka Gardens, Sacra Infermeria, and Fort St Elmo with the National War Museum.
This is a walk through the Valletta that rose after the Great Siege of 1565, became one of the most advanced fortified cities of its time, and later made history again during World War II, when Malta became one of the most heavily bombed places in Europe.
In this film, we also visit some less obvious places: we talk about Underground Valletta, the wartime command centres hidden beneath the city, the symbolic George Cross, and at the very end we add a small bonus — one of Valletta’s most iconic views: the dome of the Carmelite Basilica and the spire of the Anglican Pro-Cathedral of St Paul.
