Intro

A walk through Belem is a true feast for the senses. Strolling along the Tagus waterfront, you can admire the opening gates of the ocean, feeling almost the same excitement that must have accompanied the ancient sailors departing from this point into the unknown.

The easiest way to reach Belem is by tram number 15, which departs from Praca da Figueira or Praca do Comercio to the “Mosteiro dos Jeronimos” stop. Our adventure begins with one of Portugal’s seven wonders—the majestic Jeronimos Monastery and Church. Next, in the western wing of the monastery, the fascinating Maritime Museum awaits us. This place, rich in national heritage, transports us into the world of navigation, shipbuilding, map-making, and life at sea.

Our next stop is the Fort of Good Success, home to the Combatant Museum. Right next to it stands the impressive Combatant Monument, guarded by soldiers on honor duty. Then, we head to the famous Belem Tower, a former sea lighthouse and prison, which now towers over the riverbank, reminding us of its rich history.

Continuing our walk, we pass a monument featuring a replica of the “Santa Cruz” airplane, which crossed the South Atlantic in 1922. We then arrive at the symbolic Monument of the Discoveries, a monumental caravel commemorating Portuguese sailors and explorers.

To conclude our journey, a visit to the legendary confectionery is a must, where we can savor the famous Pasteis de Belem. This culinary masterpiece is the perfect finale to a day full of discoveries and unforgettable impressions.
