We begin our walk at the Marquis de Pombal monument, from where we head to the nearby Edward VII Park. From here, we enjoy a panoramic view of Lisbon’s axis and can visit the Carlos Lopes Pavilion adorned with azulejos or take a stroll in the botanical garden opposite the park.

Next, we proceed down the famous Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon’s most prestigious avenue, towards the Tagus River. Alternatively, we can turn right to visit the small Medeiros e Almeida Museum nearby. Continuing our scenic walk along Avenida da Liberdade and through the successive squares of Restauradores and Rossio, we reach the historic Santa Justa Elevator. (For a shorter version, take the metro from the park to the elevator.)

If there’s a queue at the lower level of Santa Justa, we recommend continuing on foot. After a short climb, we arrive at the oldest bookstore, Bertrand, and a little further, we suggest a coffee break at the famous Cafe Brasileira, a favorite haunt of the renowned Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa.

Next to the cafe, we cross the charming Luís de Camões Square. From there, we head to the Church and Convent of the Carmelite. After exploring the roofless church, and optionally the convent, we move to the upper level of the Santa Justa Elevator to admire the city panorama from the terrace connecting it to the convent.

Note: If we walked up, we can now take the elevator down, likely without a queue. If we took the elevator up, we reverse the route and finish the tour at the lower level, where we can wander through the charming streets of Baixa to the metro station at Rossio Square.
