Lisbon – practical information

Getting to Lisbon
🛫 By plane

Flying to Lisbon, we land at Humberto Delgado International Airport, located 7 km north of Lisbon’s city center. Getting to the city from here is easy, as the red metro line directly serves the airport.

Taxis are also a convenient option, and popular ride-sharing apps like Bolt and Uber work efficiently.

The airport has 2 terminals.

Public Transportation in Lisbon
🛗 Elevators

Elevadores, or elevators, are partially paid. 🪙 In these historic ones, there are ticket validators just like in buses and trams, but you can also easily buy a single ticket in the elevator, although it will be more expensive.

Usually, modern elevators hidden in shopping centers are free for everyone. The same ticket applies as for the metro and buses.

🚇 Metro
  • These are 4 lines, named by colors and marked with intuitive pictograms: yellow amarela 🌻, blue azul 🌊, green verde ⛵, and red vermelha 🧭.
  • Metro map available for download 🌐 here
  • Metro lines on the city map 🌐 here
  • The metro operates daily from 6:30 AM to 1:00 AM
  • Tickets can be purchased from machines at the entrance. The most cost-effective option is to purchase a card for 0.50 Euro and load it with up to 10 rides. One card is for one person. The card must be scanned to open the gate when entering and exiting the metro station. The ticket is valid for 60 minutes from the first validation; during this time, you can transfer to another metro line or completely switch to a tram, bus, or elevator. The rechargeable card is valid for 1 year.
  • There are no discounted fares for children or seniors. The cost of a single ride is €1.80, and children under 4 travel for free.
  • You can also purchase a 24-hour pass or, if you’re staying longer, a longer-term pass (e.g., monthly).

🚋  Trams

  • There are 6 tram lines to choose from, with Line 15 being the modern one that goes to Belém.
  • Among tourists, Line 28 is the most popular due to its highly scenic route.
  • When boarding trams (except Line 15), always enter through the front doors and exit through the rear.
  • Validate your card at the ticket validator upon entry or purchase a ticket from the tram driver.
  • Tickets bought on the tram are slightly more expensive than those loaded at vending machines.
  • You can find the public transportation map for Lisbon 🌐 here.
🚌  Bus
  • Daytime buses ☀️ operate daily from approximately 5 AM until midnight. They are identified by a 3-digit number.
  • Night buses 🌙 have numbers starting with the digit “2.”
  • Always board through the front doors, validating your card at the ticket validator next to the driver or purchasing a ticket from the driver (which will be more expensive than one bought from a machine).
  • To ensure the bus stops at your desired stop, press the “stop” button 🛑.
  • Note: Larger baggage 🫸🛄 is not allowed on buses.
