San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a small town tucked at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama. We start the day with an easy trip from Madrid, then follow the shady paths of Parque y Jardines de la Casita del Príncipe, stopping by the elegant Casita del Príncipe along the way. Step by step, we climb uphill—until El Escorial suddenly comes into view in all its grandeur: a massive granite complex, like a walled city, designed to be the “stone heart” of Philip II’s Spain.
This is the centerpiece of the trip—surprisingly majestic and quiet, with a royal pantheon hidden beneath its floors. And outside, it’s all about the views, the gardens, and the town itself, whose everyday rhythm has been tied to El Escorial for centuries.
It’s a ready-made one-day escape from Madrid—no rushing, just history, greenery, and one of the most remarkable places near the capital.
