We highly recommend this walk, especially during a summer stay in Madrid, but it is equally delightful any time the weather is nice, offering a break from the bustling streets of Spain’s capital.
The route from Puerta del Sol to Retiro Park is not long but very charming. We start our walk from the heart of the city and head towards the park, known as the green lungs of Madrid. The park was established on the grounds of the former gardens of the now-defunct Retiro Palace and holds many interesting spots.
We begin at Casa de Vacas, where visitors once enjoyed fresh milk from the cows kept here. Next, passing the Fisherman’s House, we reach the central point of the park – the monument to King Alfonso XII. From there, we head to the Velazquez Palace to see the current exhibition in this historic building, which is part of the Reina Sofia Museum.
Next, we pass by the Crystal Palace, surrounded by a pond full of ducks. The walk also takes us by the famous Fountain of the Fallen Angel and to the Memorial Grove, dedicated to the victims of the Atocha train station bombing on March 11, 2004.
In Retiro Park, you can also row a boat, play tennis, or simply relax while listening to the various street musicians. Join us for a relaxing walk full of surprises and beautiful sights!
