Secrets of the Eternal City: The Vatican, a Fortress, and the Historic Ghetto

“The Vatican, Fortress, and Former Ghetto” is a walking tour you shouldn’t miss when visiting Rome. It begins in the Vatican, where the grandeur of St. Peter’s Basilica and Bernini’s colonnade will leave you in awe. From there, head to the Vatican Museums—highly recommended if you’ve secured tickets in advance. Alternatively, stroll down the charming Via Borgo Pio, home to papal architect Domenico Fontana. Pause for coffee with a view of the Vatican walls, concealing the secret corridor that once connected the Vatican to Castel Sant’Angelo—a papal escape route.

Next, explore Castel Sant’Angelo, originally Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum, later transformed into an impregnable papal fortress. From here, the stunning Bridge of Angels, adorned with sculptures by Bernini’s pupils, leads to Via dei Coronari—a picturesque street known for its charm and delightful gelato shops. Turning right, you’ll arrive at Piazza Navona to marvel at its Baroque splendor before heading to the Basilica of St. Andrew della Valle, where the richly decorated interior invites admiration.

From the Basilica, wander through the quaint Piazza del Biscione and into the mysterious painted grotto (Grotta Pinta), uncovering remnants of the ancient Theatre of Pompey. The tour concludes in the picturesque former Jewish Ghetto, filled with narrow streets, excellent restaurants, and layers of history. Along the way, visit the Polish Church of St. Stanislaus and Martyr and pause at the majestic Great Synagogue of Rome.

This remarkable journey intertwines the spiritual, historical, and cultural richness of the Eternal City, offering an unforgettable experience of its unique atmosphere.

The route is easy but involves a lot of walking. It’s planned for a full day, excluding the Vatican Museums, which we recommend reserving another day for. Time and energy, as always, were in short supply. Some attractions require advance tickets.
