Trastevere: The Heart of Rome Across the Tiber is a walk 🚶♂️through Rome’s 13th district, Trastevere. This route offers a medium level of difficulty but promises a delightful experience. It includes a gentle climb to Janiculum Hill, the highest point in Rome. Dedicate a full day to this journey, as time may run short, especially if you plan to visit places requiring tickets or specific reservations. As always, you can watch the entire route on our YouTube channel 🎬.
The walk begins near the Palatine Bridge, where we’ll pause to admire the remains of the oldest masonry bridge in Rome – the Broken Bridge. From there, we’ll wander through the picturesque streets of old Trastevere, learning about Saint Cecilia, a martyr closely tied to this historic district. Along the way, we’ll visit some of Trastevere’s extraordinary churches.
The next stop is Janiculum Hill, a site steeped in history as a witness to the revolutionary battles of the 19th century. At its summit stands the striking equestrian monument of Giuseppe Garibaldi and his wife Anita. We’ll descend the other side of the hill to reach the legendary Villa Farnesina, a Renaissance gem adorned with Raphael’s frescoes.
As we navigate Trastevere’s charming alleys, more of its rich history will unfold. The walk concludes at Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, the district’s vibrant heart. Here, you’ll find the Basilica of Santa Maria, one of the oldest Christian places of worship in Rome.
Below, you’ll find a detailed map of the route along with links to posts providing more insights into specific attractions.
